How it all started

My name is Piers Grove and I’m a 47 year old father of two kids who had a significant stroke in May 2022. At the time I was the Managing Director of Australian Geographic and had a long history as a digital publisher in Australia.

As you might imagine, the entire stroke experience was a shock, and I was left functionality-illiterate for a few months afterwards, but since then, I have enjoyed a strong recovery. I found resources for so-called ‘young’ stroke survivors quite technical and impersonal and I wanted to put my publishing skills to use and have been producing a podcast series called, 404: Brain not Found. I’m delighted that the Stroke Foundation has just come on board as a partner for the series.

The podcast series uses my personal experience as a lens through which other stroke survivors can understand my journey and use it as a reference for their own paths back to health. So far I have run interviews with paramedics, stroke nurses, neurologists, speech pathologists and even a few other young stroke survivors. It’s been fun, cathartic and, hopefully, useful.

Launching in April 2024, 404: Brain Not Found is a new podcast dedicated to empowering young stroke survivors.

Hosted by Piers Grove, a dad, husband and publisher who himself experienced a stroke at the age of 46, this podcast aims to shed light on the often overlooked challenges faced by this demographic.

The ten-part season of 404: Brain Not Found delves into the personal journeys, triumphs and setbacks of young stroke survivors, offering a platform for candid conversations and invaluable insights. Each episode features guests who share their experiences, strategies for recovery and advice for navigating life after a stroke. As well as fellow survivors, Piers interviews an Emergency Department nurse, a paramedic, a psychologist, his own speech pathologist and even his wife, putting together a raw and real picture of stroke from different perspectives.

"As a stroke survivor, I understand the isolation and uncertainty that comes with such a life-altering event. 404: Brain Not Found is a passion project aimed at fostering a supportive community and providing resources for young stroke survivors to thrive," Piers said.

404: Brain Not Found has been created by creative publishing company General Experiments and is available on all major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts.
